MIDRA MODUS
Mercifully Intentful & Direct Reality Approaches
a sincere voyage inward — through the exhilarating terrains of the human landscape
Origins —
Like many solutions, MiDRA MODUS arose organically in response to the irreparable shortcomings of conventional models of talk therapy.
Popular interventions that most therapists use are rooted in homogenizing ideas about the human psyche which affects the entire treatment process. The result manifests in imposing standardized methods that leave little room for adapting to the unique challenges and cultural contexts of each client. This lack of adaptation disrupts therapeutic rapport, leaving both therapist and client misaligned — a disconnect that leads to eventual separation and the idea of therapy “not working” where it was expected to.
A conventional framework that is focused on treating the general symptom instead of the uniquely whole individual is not the answer.
Nor was it ever.
MiDRA MODUS —
Combining Mercy with unwavering intention
MiDRA MODUS is a framework that emerged from the combined traditions of Islamic Spirituality, Chinese Daoism (Yin-Yang), and Aristotelian Ethics.
A Psychotherapist wielding MiDRA MODUS operates from a plane of Mercy. From a traditional worldview, Mercy includes empathy, genuine well-wishing, and service to the client through a combination of guiding and overseeing them as they rediscover all the qualities they need to be themselves.
Intending well for each client, the MiDRA MODUS-wielding clinician chooses to see with piercing vision as much as possible to understand the client as thoroughly as the client is ready for. This approach is invested in knowing you, and as a result, no stone can be left unturned. Everything and every part will be assessed and understood in light of the whole of the client and their presenting challenges — directly and intentfully.
MiDRA MODUS is most effective when the client is just as ready as the therapist to voyage into the deepest, darkest, and unpalpable corners of themselves.
NOTE: This work can be frightening and sharply direct. If you feel you are not ready to be fully seen or see yourself fully, we ask that you continue working with modernly trained therapists and counselors until you are.
Definitions —
find unity among cross-traditional plurality
Each language carries its tradition within its characters. At UnderCurrent, we don’t just believe in using beautiful words that “fit right,” we also strive to embody its realities into our very approach. That is what determines a truly holistic modality from one that only appears like it.
-
The Way in classical Chinese is comprised of walking with the sandals of Yin and Yang. Knowing pleasure means that one must get acquainted with pain. Knowing expansiveness requires being intimate with constriction, etc.
-
In classical Arabic, this word carries an abundance of meanings. One of them is: a meandering stream that both shapes and is shaped by the uneven terrain it flows through until it reaches the ocean — whence it came, and where it patiently, yet persistently, yearns to return.
-
If Shariya is the path that naturally flows in alignment with terrain — then Modus (of Latin origin) might be the structured, rhythmic style or method by which one walks that path. In other words it is the mannerism by which one traverses the path.
-
From the scope of traditional Islamic frameworks, this word elucidates “giving a thing everything it needs to be itself”. It also implies a level of distance in the sense that once a thing has received everything it needs to be itself, the giver steps back and lets you do the work. This approach leads to the most effective and transformative change. It is “letting you get it” as opposed to “doing it all for you”.
